Rest in Peace, Betty Godwin
It is with deep sadness, yet joyful memories, that we share the passing of our dear friend, Betty Godwin, on December 4, 2025 at 3:45 p.m. Eastern.
For nearly two decades, Betty opened her heart—and her hometown of Plains—to dozens of St. Genevieve Valiant students and staff members. As the wife of the mayor, she lovingly and effortlessly embodied the role of Plains’ First Lady. Her natural charm, her curiosity about every person she met, and her unmistakable grace made her beloved both in Plains and here at St. Genevieve.
It was Betty who, after visiting SG and watching our production of Singing in the Rain, boldly promised,
“Our little town will do whatever it takes to get y’all to bring this show to Plains. We’ll cook your meals, put you up in our houses… whatever we need to do.”
And Betty kept that promise. She rallied her entire town—organizing home stays, home-cooked meals, and true Southern hospitality—for the approximately 120 cast members, musicians, crew, faculty, and staff who made the journey. Thanks to her persistence and vision, we truly did “make it rain” on a stage in Plains in February of 2009.
And there were many more trips to follow. Each time, Betty and the town of Plains welcomed us back with the same warmth, generosity, and unmistakable Southern hospitality. What began as a single bold promise grew into a tradition that bound our communities together.
That joyful whirlwind of music, laughter, and kindness remains a cherished memory not only for the people of Plains, but also for those of us here in Panorama City. Two towns, inexplicably and beautifully connected—yet genuinely connected—largely because of Betty’s determination, generosity, and belief in what can happen when good people gather around something they love.
Now, having completed her earthly journey on December 4, 2025, Betty has gone on to her heavenly home. May she be welcomed with the same boundless love she shared with all of us.
